Sophomore, Health Policy and Management & Social Economic Justice
Rhea is a sophomore double-majoring in Health Policy Management and Chemistry with a minor in social and economic justice. Her family is originally from Sierra Leone, West Africa but she grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. Rhea is currently serving as the Chair of UNC D.I.C.E. (Diversity and Inclusiveness in Collegiate Environments), and works as a minority advisor for incoming first year students. She is also a certified Emergency Medical Technician, and has hopes of attending medical school and developing progressive healthcare policy throughout the world.
“As I progressed through high school, I began to realize that there was a significant achievement gap between white students, and that of ethnic minorities within the school system. I became very passionate about these issues and became heavily involved with the local NAACP and Board of Education, serving as a student liaison and advocate for the students of Montgomery County, Maryland. I organized diversity summits for the county, where students from each of the 21 high school participated and conducted a round table discussion about diversity, achievement, social justice and equity. These summits were in fact very successful, and after coming to UNC in the fall, I searched for ways to make such an impact on the Carolina community as well. In the spring of my freshmen year, I was named Chair of UNC “Diversity and Inclusiveness in Collegiate Environments” (DICE), and knew that I had found my niche to tackle these issues at Carolina. And as a student at such a diverse university, and Chair of an organization determined to make the Carolina community aware of the intersections between diversity and social justice, it is my duty and pleasure to participate in a leadership series that will make me more “culturally competent”. I would like to learn how to be a leader that is aware of the implications that come with race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc, and help make the Carolina community a better place for everyone. I believe that we as students must learn before we teach and help others become aware of the diverse world in which we live in.”
